You already have the weekly status (or decision memo, or call brief) sitting in a Claude chat. Ask for a Claude Doc from that conversation, share the link once the checks pass, or export when the next step lives outside Claude.
Steps and limits follow Anthropic's Help article Get started with Claude Docs (updated 17 September 2026), with the launch framing from Reuters and The Verge. The Harbourline example is made up.
What you need first
Claude Docs is in beta on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and isn't on Free. On Pro, Max and Team it's on by default (you can turn it off in Settings > Capabilities). On Enterprise it stays off until an owner turns Docs on under Organization settings > Artifacts. Anthropic also says it isn't available yet for organisations using customer-managed encryption keys, zero data retention, or a HIPAA-ready configuration.
You need one piece of work already discussed in an open Claude conversation, with enough notes, numbers or attached files for Claude to draft from, on a paid plan as above. The result is a private Claude Doc you can edit with Claude and colleagues, share by link within your plan's rules, or export to Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs.
Why there's no Chat versus Cowork decision any more
On 16 September 2026 Anthropic said it is merging Claude Chat, Cowork, Artifacts and Design into one interface, and launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta. Reuters and The Verge both report the same move: ask for a document or deck in any conversation, edit with Claude and people, then share or export. The one Claude rollout starts with Pro and Max over the weeks after 16 September on web, desktop and mobile. You can still use ordinary chat; you no longer need a separate Cowork decision to get a shareable doc from the thread you already opened.
Ask for the doc from the chat you're in
Stay in the conversation that already holds the work. Ask Claude for a document in plain language, start the request with /docs, or choose Output then Docs from the message box. Anthropic's Help examples include drafting a status report from your notes and the previous week's numbers, turning a plan into a product spec, or pulling account notes into a one-page call brief.
Claude asks a few clarifying questions, then drafts the doc on screen. Edit by typing in the doc, by asking for another pass in the conversation, or by leaving a comment and mentioning @Claude. Every doc lands in the Artifacts tab, so you can open it again from another chat.
On web and desktop you can create, edit and change sharing. In the Claude app for iOS and Android you can ask for a doc and view it full screen from Artifacts, but Anthropic says template starts, editing and sharing settings need web or desktop.
Example: Harbourline Friday status
You've spent twenty minutes in Claude refining Friday's Harbourline migration status: blockers on the supplier cutover, the revised go-live window, and two open decisions for the steering group. Instead of copying the thread into Word by hand, you ask:
Claude should ask who the readers are and what must stay out. Answer those, then read the draft on screen. Fix invented numbers yourself. Ask for a tighter blockers section if the draft wanders. When the page is ready, decide keep versus export using the checks below.
Turn this conversation into a one-page Friday status for the Harbourline migration steering group. Use headings for progress this week, blockers, decisions needed, and next week. Keep it under 400 words. Flag any figure I have not confirmed in this chat.Check before you share
Docs start private to you. Opening a shared doc still needs a Claude account. Run this list before you send the link.
Plan and access. Free can't use Claude Docs. Pro, Max and Team should see it on by default. Enterprise needs an owner to enable Docs under Organization settings > Artifacts, and Artifacts themselves must be on. If Docs is missing, that's an access problem; no prompt will fix it.
Who can open it. On Team and Enterprise you can invite people or groups inside the organisation, or share with everyone in the organisation. Anthropic says docs cannot be shared outside your organisation yet on those plans. On Pro and Max you can share with anyone who has the link. Viewers can read; editors can read, edit, comment and export. There is no comment-only access yet.
Version history and delete. Version history isn't available yet in beta. Deleting a doc is permanent: there's no trash, and everyone who had the link loses access.
Mobile. Colleagues can open the shareable link on a phone to view the doc. Full editing, template starts and sharing changes still need web or desktop.
Usage. Creating and revising a long doc from several sources counts toward your plan's usage limits, often more than a short chat reply.
Keep it in Claude or export
Keep the Claude Doc when the next readers will work in Claude with you: live edits, comments, and Claude available to take another pass. Export when the next system needs a file. Anthropic lists Word (.docx), PDF, Markdown and Google Docs. You can also ask Claude to turn the doc into a presentation with Claude Slides.
For the Harbourline example, keep the doc if the steering group will comment inside Claude before Monday. Export to Word or PDF if the pack has to land in SharePoint or an email that can't depend on a Claude account.
