The email you still owe isn't always unread. Ask ChatGPT to go through recent Gmail conversations, including ones you've opened, and suggest which need a reply. Check the original threads before you act, then draft any reply in the chat before you decide whether to save it as a Gmail draft.
Steps follow ChatGPT + Gmail: Who Do I Owe a Reply? (cliffinkent), recorded 16 September 2026, checked 18 September 2026. The Meadowgate inbound example is made up.

Connect Gmail and name the account
Open ChatGPT Settings, then Apps or Plugins (OpenAI's own Help pages use both names). Find Gmail, pick the account you want, and read the permissions before you connect it.
This sort only needs to read mail, but don't expect Google's screen to offer separate read, compose and send switches. OpenAI's Help says that if you see All permissions are required, you reconnect and approve every permission. What ChatGPT can then do also depends on your workspace's action controls. If you're not comfortable with that level of access, don't connect the account.
If you have several Gmail accounts connected, name the one you want searched. In the recording, the inbox had a nickname to make that choice clear. For help adding another account, see Connect a second Google account to ChatGPT without mixing work and home.
Include messages you have already read
Unread filters miss the messages you read, answered in your head, and never sent. Ask ChatGPT to search the last two weeks including read mail, and to return four groups: I may owe a reply; waiting on them; no reply needed; unclear. Ask for a short explanation and a link to the original thread. Tell it not to create drafts, send messages or change anything in Gmail.
The block below is the public starter from the pinned comment on the video.
If you have more than one account connected, name the nicknamed one in the same chat. You can also exclude folders you never want in the list.
Search my Gmail from the last two weeks, including read messages. Group conversations into: I may owe a reply; waiting on them; no reply needed; unclear. Explain each suggestion briefly and link to the original thread. Don't create drafts, send messages or change anything in Gmail.Open the original before you trust the label
In the recording, the first suggested reply was cold outreach I had no intention of answering. A collaboration thread with an AI app was correctly marked as waiting on them. Promotional outreach from App Lendee, sent after Family Activity Finder appeared on Product Hub, needed no reply.
I opened each linked thread to see whether the label fitted the actual message. Treat the list as suggestions, and decide from the thread itself whether you owe a reply.
If a label will change how you act, open the thread yourself. For a wider habit on output you will act on, use How to check AI output at work.
Draft in chat, then save a Gmail draft only when you ask
For a thread that does need a reply, ask for the wording in chat first. Give any tone preferences and tell it to stick to the facts. State both limits: do not send, and do not save a Gmail draft yet.
Saving a draft and sending it are separate steps, and which ones you get depends on the connected app, your account permissions and your workspace. Ask for only the step you want, and read any approval request before you accept it.
Example: a short reply kept in chat
Suppose Meadowgate Ops writes that a shared folder link stopped working after yesterday's rename, and asks whether you still have the new path. A draft instruction might look like this:
Read the proposed reply and change anything that doesn't sound like you. If your connection supports it, ask separately to save it as a Gmail draft, then open Gmail Drafts and check the recipients, subject and body. In the recording, I saved a draft for a Curam security-researcher outreach about the website, opened it and deleted it. Nothing was sent.
Draft a concise reply to the Meadowgate Ops thread about the shared folder link. British English. Keep to the facts in the message. Do not invent a path, owner or deadline. Do not send the email. Do not save it as a Gmail draft. Put the text in this chat only.Build an action list from what you checked
Turn the threads you have checked into a short action list: conversation, next action, any stated deadline and a link to the original. Leave unverified suggestions out.
If the sort earns its place, the daily briefing guide covers a scheduled version. Run the checked list here first, so you know which suggestions are worth acting on before anything runs on a timer.
